ABSTRACTEven the history of social thought, identity and gender are ideas that, even though they have prevailed for a long period of time, haven't caused a great fuss, so, in reality, their presence and conceptual strength have gone unnoticed. Over the last 25 years, we have witnessed a considerable amount of movements that, because they originate from different social spheres, and because they have diverse political directrices, have caused the need for a profound reconsideration about their contents and uses in the scientific, institutional and daily discourse; theoretically this has meant a radical rethinking: gender and identity, identity and gender, gender identity. As social actors and cognitive subjects, we have not only witnessed the birth of these two concepts, but their total re-significance. This essay explores the social —and, in a sense, sociological— dimension of the structuring and renewal of women's gender identity.
