ABSTRACT

This study begins with an analysis of the causes underlying the large exodus of Chinese from their home country in the middle of the last century, as well as the circumnstances that led many of them to the United States as contract labor. The article describes the sea and land routes that these immigrants followed to arrive in North America, the methods they used to cross the border between Mexico and the United States, the respective positions that the two nations’ governments took regarding this flow, and the efforts of the U.S. Immigration Service to put an end to this so-called contraband, or at least reduce it. It chronicles why it was so difficult to halt this trafficking, both because of the problems involved in patrolling such an extensive border and because of the ingenuity and substantial resources that the Six Chinese Company—collectively one of the richest companies in the world—brought to bear in order to circumvent the control efforts of U.S. authorities. The article concludes with an explanation of the causes for the reduction and eventual halt in this contraband after the beginning of the 1910 Revolution, and of the repercussions of this traffic on the growth of the Chinese population in the United States during the period under study.
}, number={11}, journal={Frontera Norte}, author={Taylor Hansen, Lawrence Douglas}, year={2017}, month={ago.}, pages={41–57} }
