Landeros Jaime fjlanderos@uc.cl
The objective of this article is to analyze the experiences in caring for migrant children and adolescents on the northern border of Mexico based on the work carried out by Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and a Social Assistance Center (CAS) in the state of Sonora, which in turn allows the identification of the main problems faced by the international migration in its transit through this state. From a qualitative methodology that includes interviews, analysis of government documents, and ethnographic work carried out in shelters between 2020 and 2022, it is observed that the main factors affecting the integral care for migrant children and adolescents are the detention by agents of the National Institute of Migration (INM), the dismantling of the State regarding the activities carried out by CSOs, the lack of economic resources for the organizations themselves, and the deficiencies in care models.
2025-08-15T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Frontera Norte https://fronteranorte.colef.mx/index.php/fronteranorte/article/view/2390 The The Presentation of the Self in Everyday Border Crossing. This text is based on in-depth interviews conducted between 2020 and 2022 with different active cross-border people who use their temporary visitor visas to work in the United States and reside in Tijuana and Mexicali, Baja California. The research shows the importance of cultural elements such as social performance to explain this population’s dynamics of cross-bordering in this region.
2025-07-30T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Frontera Norte https://fronteranorte.colef.mx/index.php/fronteranorte/article/view/2395 Working Conditions of Women Scientist in a Peripheral Mexican Higher Education Institution 2024-05-09T22:47:20+00:00 Lilián Ivetthe Salado Rodríguez lilian.salado@ues.mx Ana Gabriela Rodríguez Pérez anagabriela.rodrigue@unison.mx Denise Hernández y Hernández nadhernandez@uv.mx
Recently, there has been a trend of feminization in the educational and professional fields. Such tendency has been considered a step towards gender equality. However, its significance in the overall quality of life for Mexican women has been narrowly evaluated. This article analyses diverse factors impacting the overall labor conditions of Mexican scientists (male and female) at a peripheral institution, as well as in their chances of being excluded from the Sistema Nacional de Investigadoras e Investigadores, as a mean to highlight the vulnerabilities of the female Mexican scientists geolocated outside the core of the educational system. For this, 140 surveys were applied: their results demonstrate the extent to which the distribution of academic work still responds to a traditional sexual division, negatively impacting the inclusion, in disadvantaged conditions with high social costs, of women in the scientific field.
2025-05-15T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Frontera Norte https://fronteranorte.colef.mx/index.php/fronteranorte/article/view/2426 Tijuana White: Drugs, Culture and Despair in the Fentanyl Era 2024-09-27T19:28:12+00:00 Rafael Alarcón Medina ralmed@colef.mx Jaime Adrian Rivas Valenzuela jaime.rivas@uabc.edu.mx
This paper addresses the relationships between drugs and culture in the fentanyl era in the city of Tijuana, on Mexico’s northern border, based on a review of newspapers, an analysis of governmental videos on addiction prevention, and ethnographic material. Drawing on the work of Michel Aglietta and others, we propose the existence of an addiction regime that (re)produces discourses on substance use and its institutional treatment, generating a contentious language regulating the forms of signification around drugs, and the diverse fashions in which the state manages populations involved in the drug economy, particularly in social contexts where structural conditions of despair prevail.
2025-04-15T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Frontera Norte https://fronteranorte.colef.mx/index.php/fronteranorte/article/view/2415 Capability of Manufacturing Exports to Generate Domestic Employment and Value Added in North America, 1995-2020 2024-08-14T21:55:48+00:00 Brenda Murillo Villanueva bmurillov@uaemex.mx Yolanda Carbajal Suárez ycarbajals@uaemex.mx
The aim of this study is to estimate the employment and domestic value added generated by manufacturing exports in North America countries between 1995 and 2020. To achieve this, a multi-regional input-output model is applied, utilizing data from the Trade in Value-Added (TiVA-OECD) and Trade in Employment (TiM-OECD) databases. The results indicate that economies engage in manufacturing activities with different inputs to domestic indicators. In Mexico, exports are generators of employment, in the United States, they contribute to domestic value-added, and in Canada, the composition is intermediate. It is concluded that developed countries (the U.S. and Canada) participate in stages of greater generation of domestic value added. The originality and contribution of this document lies in the application of a widely used method for the analysis of the decomposition of value added to the employment variable.
2025-03-15T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Frontera Norte https://fronteranorte.colef.mx/index.php/fronteranorte/article/view/2375 Planning and Quality of Green Areas in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua 2024-01-29T23:51:17+00:00 María de Lourdes Romo Aguilar lromo@colef.mx Lina Ojeda-Revah lojeda@colef.com.mx Juan Diego Maldonado Marín juandiego.colef@gmail.com
In Mexico, urban green areas are usually viewed as a recreational space, however, little attention is paid to their quality. In Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua there is a deficit of these spaces, and only a few are maintained. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to analyze the number, spatial distribution, and quality of urban green areas in relation to territorial planning using the Physical Activity Resource Assessment Instrument, and the Community Park Audit Tool. The findings show that the lack of planning for green areas results in a lack of equipment, poor quality of service, high levels of insecurity and incivility, as well as a lag for certain sectors of the population. Based on these results, the goal is to provide quality elements for planning in order to have an impact beyond considering the green areas as just a number.
2025-02-15T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Frontera Norte https://fronteranorte.colef.mx/index.php/fronteranorte/article/view/2383 Are Maquiladora Localities Ready to Implement Industry 4.0? 2024-02-21T18:05:12+00:00 Eduardo Arriola Ruiz eduardo.arriola@uacj.mx Redi Gomis Hernández rgomis@colef.mx Jorge Carrillo carrillo@colef.mx
This article analyzes and compares the knowledge and implementation of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies in maquiladoras in Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez through a descriptive quantitative approach. Online surveys were conducted with manufacturing sector workers to assess their familiarity with and practical application of 19 specific technologies. The results show that, while knowledge levels are moderate, practical adoption of these technologies remains limited, with Ciudad Juárez showing a slight advantage. The findings highlight the importance of improving I4.0 training to enable more effective implementation and support technological transformation in these border regions. Although the study's geographical scope is limited, it is recommended that future research encompass a wider diversity of industrial contexts. This research contributes to the understanding of the transition towards I4.0 and provides valuable insights for designing policies aimed at technological training in the sector.
2025-01-15T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Frontera Norte
