Temprano en el siglo XVI, cuando los exploradores españoles descubrieron el noroeste del México actual, quienes fueron posteriormente nombrados ópatas constituían la población más numerosa y avanzada en su desarrollo material y organización social; cuatro centurias después se habían extinguido. En The Ópatas. In search of a sonoran people, David A. Yetman ofrece un completo panorama histórico sobre la etnia desde la fase prehispánica hasta el siglo XIX, otea, así mismo, su herencia en pueblos y habitantes contemporáneos de la antigua Opatería, ubicada en la amplia porción noreste del actual estado de Sonora. Por su perspectiva, la obra se ubica en la corriente de la New Mission History.
