Abstract

El manejo y disposición de residuos sólidos en Latinoamérica constituye un problema grave. La insuficiente recolección e inadecuada disposición final de residuos sólidos provocan contaminación de tierra, aguas y aire, y presenta riesgos a la salud humana. El presente trabajo analiza experiencias recientes del reciclaje en América Latina. El trabajo concluye que existe un gran potencial para la promoción del reciclaje en Latinoamérica que ayude a resolver el problema del manejo de residuos sólidos de forma económicamente viable, socialmente deseable y ambientalmente adecuada. ABSTRACTThe management of solid wastes in Latin America constitutes a serious problem. Most cities in the region do not collect the totality of wastes generated, and only a fraction of the wastes receive appropriate disposal. The improper management of solid wastes causes water, air and land pollution and poses risks to human health and the environment. This paper analyzes recent experience on recycling programs in Latin America. It argues that a great potential exists for creating reycling programs that could help solve the problem of waste management in the region in a socially desirable, economically viable and environmentally sound manner.
