Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper seeks to unfold the intricate process of construction of social identity in the Mexico US border region. It analyzes the way in which different symbols of catholic practice (considered by many scholars as the main cultural characteristic shared by Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, in addition to language and extended family practices) are employed in the process of constructing identity for the population of Mexican origin on both sides of the border. The object of this study is to prove whether on one hand such catholic symbols can function as potential spaces for building this similarity, or if, on the other hand, they can be utilized for the discursive construction of the Other. The article is based on the identity theory that states that identity is not a "thing" that an individual "possesses" once and for all, but rather, a construction built through time which is constantly experimenting changes, due to the ongoing negotiation with Others that such construction entails.
