Abstract

En el presente trabajo se utilizan ideas relacionadas con el concepto de actividades económicas informales, con el objeto de lograr un mejor entendimiento del carácter actual de las condiciones del empleo en México. Para ello se estudian tres mercados laborales urbanos fronterizos (Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez y Matamoros) y los correspondientes a las principales áreas metropolitanas del país (ciudad de México, Guadalajara y Monterrey). La primera parte del trabajo trata acerca del aspecto definitorio del empleo informal y de sus posibilidades de operacionalización con la información de la Encuesta Nacional de Empleo Urbano; la segunda estudia las condiciones de formalidad e informalidad según sectores de actividad económica. Finalmente, se analizan las posibilidades de laborar formal o informalmente en relación con las características sociodemográflcas individuales de edad, género y educación de la población trabajadora. ABSTRACTThis work uses ideas related to the concept of informal economic activities in order to reach a better understanding of the current nature of employment conditions in Mexico. The study covers three border urban labor markets (Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez, and Matamoros) and the labor markets of Mexico's principal metropolitan areas (Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey). The first section of the article discusses the defining aspect of informal employment and the possibility of operationalizing this element using information gathered in the National Survey of Urban Employment. The second section examines the conditions of formality and informality by sector of economic activity. Finally, the article analyzes the possibilities of undertaking formal or informal employment as this relates to sociodemographic characteristics such as age, gender, and education of the working population.
