Abstract

En este artículo se presenta un estudio comparativo de la estructura de la fuerza de trabajo de Guadalajara y Monterrey, en el marco de las transformaciones generadas por la reestructuración económica global en el empleo. Específicamente, se analizan los niveles de participación de la fuerza de trabajo por edad y sexo, las condiciones bajo las cuales se emplea, su formalidad o informalidad, la distribución por grupos de ocupación y los niveles de educación y remuneración. Este análisis, basado en la información proveniente de la Encuesta Nacional de Empleo Urbano ENEU, considera a la totalidad de la fuerza de trabajo de cada ciudad, llenando un vacío dejado por estudios previos, los cuales no incluyeron en su análisis a la mano de obra empleada en los servicios. Este estudio se ubica después de la crisis económica y antes de la instrumentación del Tratado de Libre Comercio, brindando elementos para prever las probables consecuencias para la fuerza de trabajo y para el tipo de especialización productiva que se puede desarrollar en cada economía urbana. ABSTRACTIn this article the author presents a comparative study of the structure of the labor forces of Guadalajara and Monterrey, framed within the changes that worldwide economic restructuring is producing in employment. Specifically, the author analyzes the participation levels of the labor force by age and gender, the conditions under which workers are employed, the formality or informality of employment, distribution by occupational group, education, and salaries. This analysis is based on information gathered by the National Survey of Urban Employment (ENEU), in the third trimester of 1989. The study considers the entire labor force in each city, something not attempted in previous studies, which failed to include workers employed in services. The period covered by the study falls after Mexico's economic crisis and before the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement: elements within the study suggest likely impacts on the labor force and possible specializations that could be developed in each of these two urban economies.
