Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es conceptuar y presentar algunas de las principales características de la trasmigración en la frontera México-Estados Unidos. El trasmigrante es la persona que trabaja en un lado de la frontera y que reside en el otro, cruzando continuamente el límite internacional en viajes hogar-trabajo. La trasmigración en esta frontera es un proceso esencialmente interurbano, pues residencia y empleo están localizados mayoritariamente en áreas urbanizadas. Según nuestras estimaciones, en 1990 los trasmigrantes residentes en México sumaron 87 345 a lo largo de la frontera, llegando a representar hasta el 8 por ciento de la población trabajadora en las localidades fronterizas, contribuyendo con entre 14 y 20 por ciento del ingreso salarial de esas ciudades. Como la trasmigración es producto de la adyacencia geográfica de esctructuras económicas diferentes se trata de un proceso irreversible.ABSTRACTThis article attempts to outline some of the primary characteristics of transmigration across the U.S.-Mexico border. The transmigrant, who resides on one side of the international border and works on the other, crosses the border daily as he or she travels between home and workplace. Transmigration across this particular border is essentially inter-urban, since both residential and work zones largely fall within urban centers. Our results indicate that approximately 87 345 transmigrants resided in Mexico's northen border region during 1990. Together they represent 8 percent of the working population in the region and contribute between 14 and 20 percent of the wage income of the border cities. Since transmigration in a product of the geographic proximity of the asymmetrical economic structures, this phenomenon is irreversible.
