Abstract

La frontera de Estados Unidos con México presenta características demográficas distintas de las del resto del país, debido a las interrelaciones que se han establecido entre uno y otro lado de la frontera. Una de estas características es que la población se divide prácticamente entre "anglos" y de origen mexicano. Asimismo, cada uno de estos grupos tiene estructuras demográficas similares a las de sus respectivos nacionales. Mientras los "anglos" presentan altos niveles de envejecimiento demográfico, la población de origen mexicano permanece joven. Esto da lugar a la coexistencia de dos grupos étnicos con distintas estructuras por edad, con algunas implicaciones socioeconómicas de consideración.ABSTRACTThe U.S. border with Mexico presents distinct demographic characteristics from the rest of the country, due to the cross-border linkages established between the two countries. One such characteristic is that the border population, both in Mexico and the United States, divides into an Anglo component and a Mexican-origin component, with both groups displaying demographic structures patterned on the characteristics of their respective country of origin. For example, the Anglo border population is older, the Mexican population younger. This coexistence of two ethnic groups with differing age structures has important socioeconomic implications.
